GIS Database, Synopsis, and Atlas of the Parasites of Great Lakes Fishes

There is an increasing need by Great Lakes fisheries managers to have access to geographically based fish parasite data to improve management decisions. Currently, the literature of Great Lakes fish parasites is scattered in theses, dissertations, research reports, and the primary scientific literature and is not readily available to fisheries managers. Based on discussions with various fisheries scientists, it has become obvious that many of them are unaware of much of the published information on the parasites of Great Lakes fishes. Although the parasites in Canadian waters of the Great Lakes have been listed (study ended in 1977), there is not a single database or document that summarizes information on the fish parasites in American and Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. There is the need for fisheries biologists to have easy access to these data and to merge these data with fish community, water quality, and physical habitat databases. We will develop a database system to store all the available and future parasite data and output GIS data layers, provide a synopsis of the current knowledge of Great Lakes fish parasites (protozoans, digenetic trematodes, cestodes, monogeneans, nematodes, acanthocephalans, copepods, leeches), and develop an atlas on Great Lakes fish parasites.
