ECOHAB - Complex Interactions between Harmful Phytoplankton and Grazers: Variation in Zebra Mussel Effects across Nutrient Gradients

This program is a collaborative effort between Michigan State   University and the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research   Laboratory aimed at understanding the factors driving recent   dramatic increases in the frequency and intensity of harmful   phytoplankton blooms in the Great Lakes. The central goal of the   work is to enhance understanding of how nutrients and exotic   herbivores interact in promoting harmful phytoplankton in the Great   Lakes. Recent discoveries suggest that existing paradigms about the   effects of nutrient loading on harmful phytoplankton are not   applicable in habitats invaded by the zebra mussel. The proposal   seeks to improve understanding about how nutrients and exotic   herbivores (specifically, Dreissenid mussels) interact in promoting   harmful phytoplankton in the Great Lakes.  This effort is jointly   funded by NOAA and EPA.     (water); (drinking water); (health effects); (ecological effects);  (exotic species); (cyanobacteria); (bluegreen algae);   (phytoplankton); (Dreissena polymorpha); (D. polymorpha); (M.   aeruginosa); (Microcystis aeruginosa); (algal bloom); (algal   blooms); (algae); (zebra mussel); (zebra mussels); (microcystis)
