Purple Loosestrife Studies

This project receives multi-agency funding by MSU, Michigan Sea Grant, MDA, MDNR, MDEQ, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  This project focuses on biological control of purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria, an ANS that is an aggressive invader of North American wetlands, lakes and rivers.  The MDA has supported this project directly through contributions to MSU and indirectly to support rearing of the natural enemies by the USDA Plant Protection Center in Niles, Michigan.  Starting in 1994, the MDA in cooperation with the MDNR, Wildlife Management Division, conducted releases of two species of Gallerucella beetles, host-specific natural enemies of this ANS
