Virulence Assessments of Isolates of Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus (IPNV) Endemic and Exotic to the Great Lakes Basin

Point-source challenge protocols will be used to determine the   virulence of selected IPNV isolates (4  isolates) for young-of-the-  year Salmonid fishes (8 species).  Sustained exposure protocols will   be used to determine potential for infection and disease associated   with chronic low-level exposure.  Cell culture assays will determine   presence and titer of virus.  Survivor analysis will be used to   evaluated and model data.  The project will be staged as young-of-  the-year fish are available.    The proposed research addresses the GLFC Strategic Vision of a   Healthy Great Lakes Ecosystem, the Research Theme Area "Role of   Diseases in the Abundance of Wild Fish Populations" and the risk   assessment decision making process being considered by the Great   Lakes Fish Health Committee to estimate the impact of release of   IPNV-carrier cultured fish on wild fishes.  This research addresses   a significant gap in the knowledge of the virulence characteristics   of IPNV's endemic and exotic to the Great Lakes basin as well as the   impact of virus-laden culture effluents on wild fishes.
