Laboratory Studies to Investigate Reduction/Removal of Sediment Toxicity Caused by Organic Toxicants

Two major organic toxicants, Methyl t-Butyl Ether (MTBE), an   oxygenate additive to gasoline; and fluoranthene (PAH) have widely   different solubilities in water which can have a deleterious effect   on sediment and sediment activities. In this laboratory study we   plan to do the following: 1) Evaluate adsorbents (carbogenic,   polymeric, macronet, and fly ash derivatives) to scavenge organic   chemicals from interstitial water of sediment and to act as an   "in-situ" control. 2) Initiate studies with MTBE and   Fluoranthene to assess bioaccumulation ability of ferns (genus   Cerotopteris) to sequester pollutants through roots or rhizomes or   to use as a metabolic carbon source. 3) Establish fate of MTBE and   Fluoranthene in laboratory studies of contaminated sediment and   water  including fern spores sown on agar plates, adsorbent uptake   from contaminated soil and water, and hydroponics studies with   selective species. 4) Compare results of environmental fate analysis   with computational studies on energetics of degradation and   metabolic by-products.
