Metabolic Costs of Spawning in Zebra and Quagga Mussels

This project is the second component of an ongoing investigation designed to estimate energy demands of reproduction in zebra and quagga mussels. The first component, completed last summer at Ohio State University s F.T. Stone Laboratory, examined the metabolic demands of each mussel species during the release of gametes. In this proposed second component, I will determine the rate, quantity, and total time required for gamete release. Results of these two studies will provide an estimate of total energy expended by zebra and quagga mussels during spawning.
