Vocalizations of Round Gobies (Neogobius melanostomus) and Mottled Sculpins

Objectives: The overall objective of this study is to characterize and compare sound production by round gobies (Neogobius melanostomus) and mottled sculpins (Cottus bairdi) - both in the laboratory and field. In addition, we will characterize the responses of male and female round gobies and mottled sculpins to conspecific and interspecific vocalizations. We will also record the variation in vocalizations among males and the effect of such variation on male reproductive success. These preliminary studies will provide basic information on the effects of vocalizations on each species and will provide information on the potential use of vocalizations to influence the distribution and abundance of round gobies.
