Genetic Evaluation of Coaster Brook Trout Hatchery Programs Using DNA Markers

Researchers will compare genetic profiles of "coaster" brook trout  hatchery broodstock to natural populations and will monitor genetic  change within hatchery broodstocks.  These comparisons will guide  hatchery managers in their efforts to retain wild genetic diversity  in captive stocks and to maximize the genetic diversity in  restoration attempts. Objectives: To: (1) determine the extent to which captive hatchery  broodstocks for brook trout in the Lake Superior basin represent and  maintain the genetic diversity of their natural source populations,  and (2) determine the extent to which populations undergoing  restoration represent the genetic diversity of their hatchery  broodstocks.
