Ecotoxicology of Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentina) in Presque Isle Bay and the Pennsylvania Lake Erie Watershed

Objectives: While previous studies with freshwater turtles in the   Great Lakes region have addressed their importance as indicator   species and addressed some of the effects of existing turtle   contaminant levels on embryo development, this study pursues further   objectives including:  1) identifying, comparing, and geographically correlating levels of   Hg and PCB in snapping turtles in the Pennsylvania Lake Erie   watershed and Presque Isle Bay;  2) assessing correlations between toxicant levels in various   lethally and non-lethally collected snapping turtle tissue samples   for future use in developing non-lethal, turtle toxicant sampling   methods which might have application in other turtle species;  3) determining if environmental variables, such as temperature and   moisture, can affect the amount and type of PCB congeners   metabolized by snapping turtle embryos;  4) determining the effects of contaminants, particularly PCBs, on   hatchling metabolism and the post-hatch behaviors critical to   hatchling survival success    (PCB); (PCB's); (PCBs); (persistent organic pollutant); (persistent   organic pollutants); (POP's); (POP); (POPs): (polychlorinated   biphenyls); (polychlorinated biphenyls); (toxic organics); (toxic   organic); (mercury); (Hg); (toxic metal); (toxic metals); (snapping   turtles); (snapping turtle); (Chelydra serpentina); (Lake Erie);   (Pennsylvania); (chemicals of concern); (chemical of concern)
