Atwater Beach Ecological Study and Management Plan

The project seeks to restore and revitalize Atwater Beach, an   important coastal park located along Lake Michigan within the   Village of Shorewood in Milwaukee County, through the development   and distribution of an Ecological Study and Management Plan   (Ecological Study). The Ecological Study would serve as a necessary   first step towards the restoration and improvements for the   deteriorating and poor ecological conditions at Atwater Beach.     The Ecological Study will directly address three general research   issues:   1) Impacts of the three concrete masonry jetties on Cladophora   formation, beach formation/retention, and recreational activities;   2) Impacts of invasive species, including zebra mussels, on the   quality of the beach and water; and   3) Impacts of nonpoint source run-off from the beach on the water   quality.     The Ecological Study will examine the three zones that require   active management by the community and Village of Shorewood: the   water, the shoreline, and the beach. The results of the Ecological   Study will provide a detailed accounting of the problems affecting   the water, beach, and shoreline as well as provide specialized   guidance on how to manage the beach and preserve its integrity for   both the short term and long term. These results would be presented   and detailed in the final Ecological Study and Management Plan for   Atwater Beach.    (AIS); (aquatic invasive species); (ANS); (aquatic nuisance   species); (exotic species); (zebra mussels); (Dreissena polymorpha);   (dreissenids); (Lake Michigan); (cladophora); (algal bloom); (algal   blooms); (eutrophication); (beach closure); (beach closures); (beach   closings); (beach closing); (nonpoint source pollution); (non-point   source pollution); (nonpoint source runoff); (non-point source   runoff); (Wisconsin); (shoreline)
