Toxaphene in the Marine Ecosystem of the Saint Lawrence River; State of Contamination, Ecotoxicology and Human Health

The overall objective of this project was to determine the levels   and extent of toxaphene contamination in the marine ecosystem of the   St. Lawrence (MESL) and the health risks to humans and marine   species. Specific project objectives were:  1) to measure toxaphene levels and chemistry in living organisms,   water and sediments of the MESL;  2) prepare extracts of toxaphene from marine organisms of the MESL   for toxicity testing in living marine species;  3) to study the ability of toxaphene at levels found in the MESL to   cause malformations in developing marine fish embryos; and  4) to determine the effects of toxaphene on the human immune system   response.    (toxaphene); (St. Lawrence River); (toxaphene); (toxic organic);   (toxic organics); (organochloride insecticides); (organochlorides);   (organohalide stubs); (chemicals of emerging concern); (chemical of   emerging concern); (persistent organic-chemical pollutants); (POP);   (POP's); (persistent organic chemicals); (persistent organic   chemical); (chemicals of concern); (chemical of concern)
