High-throughput gene sequencing and database technology to integrate clinical and environmental monitoring of disease-causing microbes

Health officials and scientists are now awakening to the importance   of environmental routes of exposure to human disease-causing   organisms. Currently, there are no databases that archive the   virulence (disease causing) genes of important human pathogens that   are found in environments where exposure occurs. We must begin now   to build databases of virulence genes in environmental reservoirs so   that we can mine the combined clinical and environmental data to   identify novel routes of human exposure. The limits of the   processing technology required to obtain such data has been a factor   precluding large efforts at environmental gene monitoring, but by   using high-through put multiplex sequencing technology, we will   begin creation of an extensive database of human pathogen virulence   genes occurring in environmental reservoirs. To prove the efficacy   of this approach, the proposed study has been narrowed to focus on   one virulence gene family and on one environmental reservoir: shiga   toxin genes in Great Lakes beach sand.
