Development of an Ecosystem Services Bank

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will protect and restore watersheds by developing and implementing an "Ecosystem Services" market for the Great Lakes region. Modeled on a similar program in the Chesapeake Bay, this program will provide local incentives for landowners wanting to sell their ecosystem resources to potential buyers. Landowners will, therefore, have a financial incentive to maintain their forests. This project will build an awareness and desire to maintain the forest land base of the Great Lakes. The project will be completed by June 2012.
