Sea Lamprey Movements in the St. Marys River

More precise measures of adult spawning-phase sea lamprey Petromyzon   marinus movements are of interest to the Great Lakes Fishery   Commission (GLFC).  In 2  1 and 2  2, the GLFC funded the DFO Sea   Lamprey Control Centre and USFWS Marquette Biological Station to   conduct 2D radio-telemetry studies in the St Marys River basin,   located between Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario,and Sault Ste. Marie,   Michigan, to prioritize trapping site selection.  However,   individual movement information captured during the study from the   252 radio-tagged specimens released was never analyzed in depth.    The objectives of this study are to: (1) sort, analyze, and map   individual pathways for a maximum of approximately 9 % of the 252   spawning-phase radio-tagged sea lamprey adults from two years of St.   Marys River fixed station and mobile tracking data; and (2) combine   and analyze the complex of pathways resulting, using geographic   spatial analysis tools to define physical or behavioral choke points   or zones of concentration.  This analysis will highlight preferred   routes, if they exist, permitting more precise location of pathways   or collecting sites, in support of future decisions around   additional enhanced trapping or the new pheromone application.
