Chemostratigrphy of a Champlain Sea Basin aquitard: application of a portable XRF analyzer

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyses provide an efficient, cost-effective, and non-destructive method to measure elemental concentrations in sediment samples. The technology can be used in the field, on low moisture-content samples, to measure abundances of elements from Mg up to U.
 This study assesses the validity of using a portable NITON XL3t GOLDD hand-held XRF analyzer, in Soil Mode, to define the chemostratigraphy of a 96 metre borehole, through late Pleistocene Champlain Sea sediments, near Ottawa, Ontario. Results are compared with the geological, geophysical, and
grain size data and reveal a strong correlation between all datasets.
